About This Test

What It Measures

This test measures your implicit beliefs about intelligence and ability—whether you believe skills can be developed through effort (growth mindset) or are essentially fixed traits (fixed mindset). It evaluates whether you see challenges as opportunities to grow or threats to your self-image, whether effort feels productive or pointless, and whether learning or performance validation drives you. Carol Dweck's research shows mindset powerfully predicts achievement, resilience, and willingness to take on difficult challenges. Fixed mindset people avoid situations where they might fail because failure means 'I'm not smart.' Growth mindset people embrace challenges because struggle means learning.

How It Works

You'll respond to 8 statements about belief in your own development—whether effort makes you stronger, whether you can change your skills through practice, whether learning is your goal, and whether you have faith in your capacity to develop abilities. Your score places you on a spectrum from very fixed (abilities are innate and static) to very growth-oriented (abilities develop through dedication). Based on Carol Dweck's pioneering research on implicit theories of intelligence and decades of mindset research.

When to Use This Test

Take this test if you avoid challenges for fear of looking stupid, if you give up quickly when things get hard, if you feel jealous rather than inspired by others' success, if you believe 'I'm just not good at math/writing/relationships,' or if you're entering a learning environment (new job, school, skill development) and want to understand your baseline. Discovering a fixed mindset isn't a life sentence—mindset itself can be developed. Understanding your beliefs is the first step toward changing them, which unlocks higher achievement and resilience.
