About This Test
What It Measures
This test measures affective empathy - your emotional reactivity to others' feelings. It evaluates how deeply you feel what others feel, from emotional contagion (catching others' moods) to visceral responses to suffering. This is distinct from cognitive empathy (understanding what others think) and measures your emotional resonance capacity.
How It Works
You'll respond to 11 statements about emotional reactions to others' joy, pain, excitement, and distress. Questions cover responses to movies, crowds, children, suffering, and embarrassment. Your score places you on a spectrum from emotionally detached (observing without feeling) to emotional sponge (absorbing others' feelings intensely). The test is based on affective empathy research.
When to Use This Test
Take this test if you've been called 'too sensitive', if you struggle with emotional boundaries, if others say you're cold or unfeeling, if you cry easily at movies or news stories, or if you're exploring whether you're an empath. This measures one dimension of empathy - not compassion, not helping behavior, just emotional resonance.
